Heidi - David did not write that; I did. He're is what I said:

The earned income credit was passed under "Ford' but greatly expanded under Reagan. The idea of the earned income credit was to raise the working poor out of poverty. To that regard it has been somewhat successful and under the FAIR TAX that would go away. If you think about it, a more conservative approach would have been to substantially raise the minimum wage and let the work place pull the working poor out of poverty. Instead we redistribute tax revenue.

I thought that would get a reaction. My point was that if the minimum wage is not enough and even working full time a family is in poverty then why should we have an earned income credit except to enable employers to pay less than the poverty level. This helps the individual as well as the business owner who needs to keep payroll tax.

I am not saying I want to change anything here. I was just pointing to the fact that two Republican Presidents signed the earned income into law and then expanded on it. I was reflecting on the fact that it did not seem to be the policy of the party that is for fiscal responsiblity.

I was also pointing out that the Fair Tax would eliminate the Earned Income Credit.
