David:

Are you absolutely insane?!?! Spend enough to be out of poverty? What exactly does that mean? My gosh why don't you just pay their entire way for them their whole life. I am fed up paying the way for everyone else in this country that refuse to do it themselves. That is why my taxes are so high. We pay for everthing!

I guess for liberals, proper judgement is backed by the proper feelings. Knowledge is not only unneccessary, it gets in the way.

You are absolutely off the mark on that statement.

Heidi - David did not write that; I did. He're is what I said:

The earned income credit was passed under "Ford' but greatly expanded under Reagan. The idea of the earned income credit was to raise the working poor out of poverty. To that regard it has been somewhat successful and under the FAIR TAX that would go away. If you think about it, a more conservative approach would have been to substantially raise the minimum wage and let the work place pull the working poor out of poverty. Instead we redistribute tax revenue.

I thought that would get a reaction. My point was that if the minimum wage is not enough and even working full time a family is in poverty then why should we have an earned income credit except to enable employers to pay less than the poverty level. This helps the individual as well as the business owner who needs to keep payroll tax.

I am not saying I want to change anything here. I was just pointing to the fact that two Republican Presidents signed the earned income into law and then expanded on it. I was reflecting on the fact that it did not seem to be the policy of the party that is for fiscal responsiblity.

I was also pointing out that the Fair Tax would eliminate the Earned Income Credit.

Heidi,
Thank you for the correction, and for the pleasant tone with which you corrected. Civility in blogs is underated.

What I said is
I don't believe a family should pay a dime in taxes until they spend enough to be out of poverty. There are enough of the rest of us to take care of what needs to be done.

what I meant to say is " . . . until they earn enough to be able to spend more than the poverty level . . ." or " . . . until their spending is high enough to demonstrate they are no longer living in poverty . . ."

I'm not sure what you thought I meant because the nonsequiter that is the rest of your post does not seem to be directed at anything I can imagine my words as being interpreted. Perhaps you thought I was saying we or the government should spend enough to lift the family out of poverty?

And I agree with you that feelings and judgement go hand-in-hand and should always be used in conjunction. But I disagree and think knowledge is the necessary third leg of that stool.
