Mr Pellend, speaking as a military retiree, and veteran of every conflict from Vietnam to Desert Storm I am highly offended that you would have the gall to speak for what our men in uniform might think. I can assure you we think quite differently than you. We think about duty and honor. We respect our leaders and when it comes time to vote, we look at what they have done, where they have been, and how they conduct themselves. We want them to love our country as we do. This includes s tanding and paying respect to our flag. Thank-you

I did not presume to speak for all veterans or all soldiers in Iraq. I am quite sure those fighting this war want to win this war. In my opinion they did that shortly after invasion and when they captured Sadaam.
It is not the veterans or soldiers I take issue with. It is the White House who ignored the recommendations of their generals and military leaders when they invaded Iraq. Rumsfeld was told that more troops were needed to secure the peace but chose not to supply them.
Now many of our troops are being deployed over and over, tour after tour. It would be only natural to assume that when they would be coming home would be important to them and their families. This is not to say that they don't care about duty and honor.
I understand you are upset about Obama's not putting his hand over his heart one time during the playing of the National Anthem and you are offended. Still this man is fighting for our vets in ways that Cornyn (no military service) and McCain are not. He voted for the bill that would give our Afghan and Iragi vets the same benefits world war II vets received.
Obama's position on Iraq is not one of surrender; it is a recognition of the fact that we won the war and now it is time for the Iraq government to step up and unify. The feeling is that as long as we stay there, the pressure on Iraq to accomplish this unification is not there. Therefore as President, Obama will direct the military that the goal is to disengage and bring the troops home in a way that is safe, that leaves some troops to help Iraqi troops with further training and to step in in emergency situations if needed.
In this election, as in recent elections, McCain's party or supporters of McCain are trying to focus the election on one issue. The attack on Obama regarding his religion, or saluting the flag, or some other minor statement that could be taken the wrong way is just an effort to not talk about real issues facing this country.
The same is true on the other side. Who cares if Cindy McCain's cookie recipies were her own or not? What do we learn from that about McCain's stand on education, health care, or fixing the economy. If the press is busy comparing Michelle Obama to Cindy McCain we are not getting the information on issues that are important in this election.
The rights we have in this country, the ones you fought for, must be preserved and besides military efforts like yours, it is also important that the public is informed on the issues and exercises their right to chose their leaders according to who they think can best solve the issues facing this country.
I believe that man is Barack Obama. I do not support him based on Cindy McCain's cookie recipies. I support him because he has the education and judgement needed to run this country. Hopefully you will be able to get past the one issue that upsets you and then if you vote McCain it will be becuase you feel he is best; not becuase of a vote against Obama.
Vote Obama for US President Vote Rick Noriega (Afghan vet) for US Senate
PS Thanks to Bill Bala for once again correcting my misspelled words. Keep up the good work.

Mr. Fason, as a Veteran Vietnam I am grateful for Mr. Pelland’s words. He doesn’t speak for all veterans but he does speak the truth. He is not spouting rhetoric words heard from some talking head on cable or some Don Quixote mentality. He gives you the truth and let you determine where you go from there. If you are offended, then perhaps it’s working. Yes the military does teach you respect for the flag and country but it also teaches respect for the office of presidency. The person sitting in that position is not for us to question as the people elect them. We serve to protect the Constitution
