Heidi - I know you are not an Obama fan but he has talked about tuition credits in exchange for giving back to the community.
One idea that could help teacher/student ratio is to offer tuition help to those taking education courses as their major in exchange for in-class teacher aid programs while still in college.
This could provide the ed major with hands-on experience in the class room while giving current teachers an extra pair of hands. The individual attention would surely help the students.
This is just an idea; maybe good-maybe not.
I watch my great granddson as he learns to walk, talk, look at books, and I marvel at the joy he expresses when he learns new things. Somehow the joy of learning must be fostered all through the school years and while testing may help the educator identify success or lack thereof, I believe todays education system relies too much on teaching to a test and not enough on inspiring our youth.
In previous letters you mention the responsibility of parents. I agree but also recognize that today's world that requires two parents to work just to make a living is different then when my mother could stay at home and teach her 5 children while my father worked.
I think we have to recognize the realities, that there are more divorced parents, more parents where both are working, and many parents with less time than in generations past. This creates a situation that maybe could be helped with some type of after school programs much as head start helps with early childhood education.

Bill - you will not like me after this letter but here goes. I personally don't like the idea of any tuition credit in exchange for giving back to the community. That's me. That is tooooo much government for me. I prefer people just taking responsibililty for their own lives and the decisions they make. It is not the job of the government. We have made it easier to not achieve then it is to stay home and collect a monthly check.
If you look at the bigger picture as to why kids are struggling in school so much I think you can blame it on the women's movement in the 1970's. It forced women out of the home and into the workforce. I personally don't buy the equal work for equal pay because I think women take advantage of it (here come the letters!). It put a strain on the male workforce and made it impossible for men to be the sole provider. It also brought on millions of divorces and made it so easy to just quit. Families began to break down and BOOM! Here we are with generations of kids that just don't care.
Having that said, I believe that no matter if you are a single parent working two jobs (which my middler sister did), it is your job to educate and encourage your child to learn. Kids are not dumber than they use to be! They are lazy and want the quick money, the quick ride to success. They value nothing because they have worked for nothing.
I am NOT putting all kids in this catagory - don't get me wrong. But the kids that refuse to learn are rude and disruptive in class are lazy.
Where is the money going to come from for after school programs? Me and You! These kids won't go to after school programs because the parents don't care if they do. There is no accountability. They barely wait for the bell to ring before they take off. I have seen it over and over. It would be a waste of time and money I'm afraid.
I honestly don't know what the answer is -
