Get back to basics!

Heidi - Check out what RTI really is. It appears as a method to diagnose children with learning disabilities that have not previously been diagnosed. I only had a brief moment to research this on the internet but I'm not sure how labeling more kids as learning disabled is going to improve math scores.

My gut feeling is that the education system would be better served by reducing teacher to student ratios in those subjects a school finds itself lagging.

Years ago, the fifties, we were taught to do our math with pencil and paper. Now kids use calculators and I am not opposed to that. I do think though that they should learn the pencil and paper for long division, mutliplication, addition, and substaction first. In using the pencil I believe that they will learn the concepts so important and from this base of learning can then move up to higher math concepts.

Bill -

I will do some research on RIT. I think your idea of getting back to basics is a must. Better teacher to student ratio should be mandatory but I honestly don't know how they could achieve that. There must be a way.

Thanks for the information -

Heidi
