This message is for the reader who commented that staff development for teachers will not work. I am a curriculum coordinator for a school district outside of Tyler. I agree that teachers are overworked, but it is up to the teacher and the campus administrators to determine if staff development will or will not work. The state determined that the rigor of the math curriculum needed upgrading due to the low proficiency of our students in math, and with that upgrade comes much more hard work and expectations for the students. In order to help students achieve this, teachers must be prepared to help those students who are struggling...all students. The problem of struggling students can no longer be ignored. In order to insure that all students learn the Response To Intervention (RTI) model of instruction has been developed and all school districts are asked to put this model into action. (Ms. Tunnell may be referring to this as the needed staff development) The results of having used this model in other schools throughout the nation have been scientifically researched based and are very impressive. This method of instruction, assessment, and intervention will require professional development (training of teachers). Teachers are professionals who work with our most precious commodity. I dare say that committed teachers are willing to learn and do all they can to help our children become more proficient which leads to a more productive society. My hat is off to Ms. Tunnell, campus administrators and our professional teachers who never give up learning more effective ways to make a positive difference in our society. Helyn Morriss

Ms. Morriss:
Your input was helpful. Why do you think kids are having more and more difficulity in math? I have two kids in TISD and I don't know why kids are continuing to do poorly in math. I think it is our society and lack of parental guidance.
I would really like to know your thoughts.
Thanks Heidi

Get back to basics!
Heidi - Check out what RTI really is. It appears as a method to diagnose children with learning disabilities that have not previously been diagnosed. I only had a brief moment to research this on the internet but I'm not sure how labeling more kids as learning disabled is going to improve math scores.
My gut feeling is that the education system would be better served by reducing teacher to student ratios in those subjects a school finds itself lagging.
Years ago, the fifties, we were taught to do our math with pencil and paper. Now kids use calculators and I am not opposed to that. I do think though that they should learn the pencil and paper for long division, mutliplication, addition, and substaction first. In using the pencil I believe that they will learn the concepts so important and from this base of learning can then move up to higher math concepts.
