Post Subject: Texas Teachers are NOT unionized Read Article

While the organization referred to by Berman (TSTA) is part of a national teacher's union organization, Texas forbids teachers to BE unionized. They can join "organizations" that support their interests but they are not political organizations. Thus, Berman's assertion is directed toward one place, but ignores the payroll deductions of ATPE and TCTA which take no political direction. It is true TSTA does, but these payroll deductions for the other two state organizations are one way some teachers, especially in East Texas where if they are not in large cities are grossly underpaid (and that's arguable in large cities as well), can afford the dues. Berman's attack on his prejudices will hurt all teachers in all three organizations in the pocketbooks. These organizations provide liability insurance that other professionals get. The payroll deduction is a way to be sure the money is committed (as opposed to monthly mailings which can be easily stopped) and cover teachers from the day they enroll, protecting them from lawsuit happy people who might sue for poor reasons, administrators who deny rights according to TX Education Code and other vital things. To punish a few is to hurt many. Berman's lost me forever.

PS I am a registered Republican, but I will never support ignorance.
