I was a student at Robert E. Lee 10 years ago when the IB program was first enacted at John Tyler. Now I have been a teacher at JT for almost three years. Do you really want to know what the true problem is?
Ever since "TAKS" was accepted as the defining line of education for every student, it inevitably became a severe limitation as well.
There is a huge difference between a curriculum centered around an end of course exam and one that is based on TAKS. With TAKS, students cannot ever receive adequate presentation of a full concept, but only bits and pieces. Learning through TAKS is quite like understanding all the ingredients to a recipe but never receiving the actual recipe to know how all things fit together. How frustrating would this be for you? Now keep in mind, students are getting tested to death on top of this. Can you honestly imagine how difficult it is for these students to be required to master 5-9 chapters in just maybe a four week period? It is as hard on teachers as well as students.
As for who's job it is to inspire students...IT IS everyone's job to inspire them! I would not want to be a student in this day and age...I praise them everyday for coming to school...Wherever the IB program goes, TISD will make sure students find it....it is not about location, but availability.

Jennifer:
Being a teacher you know more thanever could. From what my kids tell me and what I see TAKS is the worse thing to happen to public school. The teachers are not allowed to teach anymore. Outrageous demands are put on you to teach TAKS and not the actual course.
Kids do have it harder than I did when I was in high school - I don't know exactly when that changed for the worse but it did.
What would be ideal is if all parents encouraged their child to go to school, to pay attention and excel. That is our role as parents. I certainly do not go around telling kids that they are stupid and to drop out of school but it gets back to personal responsibility. Our society has moved so far away from being accountable for our own actions.
I blame the lazy parents and the disgusting "Hollywood" community for doing this to our kids.
It is tough enough raising kids without the violent, immoral messages that slam kids daily through tv, music and movies.
The ironic part of all of this is that my daughter desperately wants to be a teacher. She sees the problems and actually wants to make a difference. I don't doubt that she will.

What is so hard about 5-9 chapters in a four week period? That is what is wrong with so many incoming freshmen in college is that they are so used to the slow pace of high school that they get go crazy when they get to college.
