Mini Maker Faire coming to Discovery Science Place

Creativity and invention will be on display Saturday during the Tyler Mini Maker Faire at the Discovery Science Place.
The event is the first of its kind held here but is one of more than 60 happening around the world this year, according to a news release about the event.
Described as “part science fair, part county fair and part something entirely new,” it will feature more than 30 exhibitors showcasing their projects and talking about what they have learned.
Exhibits will span science, engineering, art, performance and craft, according to the news release.
Rocket launching, art and solar cars, bridge designs, robotics and Lego creations are just a few of the planned exhibits.
The University of Texas at Tyler, LeTourneau University and Tyler Junior College will be among the universities represented. Individuals and families also will have displays.
Those who attend will have the opportunity to participate in some of the on-site demonstrations and do-it-yourself clinics.
Several performances are scheduled, including ArcAttack, a high voltage show, and FlyKids, a local dance troupe.

Discovery Science Place CEO Phil Lindsey said the Maker Faire is a natural fit for the science center, according to a prepared statement.
“Science is about exploring, experimenting, re-conceiving and examining ideas and using good old fashion ingenuity to bring what was created to fruition,” Lindsey said, according to a news release about the event. “Maker Faire does that in many different ways that are unique, interesting to watch, exciting to do and easy to reimagine in contexts that engage the participants.”
Mayor Barbara Bass said the city is committed to creating an economy that celebrates and explores innovation, according to a news release.
“The Tyler Maker Faire fits in perfectly with that objective and is a fun way to showcase the innovative aspect of our Industry Growth Initiative, our plan for economic prosperity and growth.”
The faire runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Discovery Science Place, 308 N. Broadway Ave., in Tyler. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
