Cemetery walk provides visitors a lesson on history of East Texas city

Actors dressed in period costumes will portray residents from Palestine’s past in a historical cemetery walk April 6 at Palestine City Cemetery, announced officials with the Palestine Public Library, which is sponsoring the event.

Tours will begin at 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.

Characters portrayed will include Captain William Kimbro, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto; Louisiana “Aunt Bee” Small, who nursed Civil War soldiers from Granbury’s Brigade; Alexander Joost who owned the first store on Courthouse Square; Dr. Henry H. Link, a physician who began his practice in Palestine in 1851; and Mary Micheaux Swanson, member of one of the city’s founding families.

Attendees will meet other historical residents of Palestine and learn more about the history of the city and how people lived during the period from the time Texas became a state in 1846 to the period immediately after the Civil War.

Tickets are $15 per person and are available at Palestine Public Library.
