Longtime Whitehouse residents Bill and Betty Norris are the new Mr. and Mrs. YesterYear.

The couple, who have been married nearly 60 years, found out about the designation earlier this month.

Mrs. Norris, 75, said she was “humbled, surprised (and) honored” when YesterYear committee members gave her the news.

“I just never in my wildest dreams thought even about wanting to have that honor. … We were very surprised,” she said.

The couple first moved to Whitehouse in 1958. When they moved, they didn’t just want to live in the community — they wanted to be involved in it, Mrs. Norris said. And they have been.

Norris was president of Whitehouse Band Boosters, among other things, his wife said.

The couple also served in the youth department at First Baptist Church, where they still attend.

Mrs. Norris, who is retired, said she spent 34 years working for Whitehouse schools and still serves as a substitute, She’s also part of a quilting group and volunteers with The Salvation Army. They have two children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“It’s just a wonderful place to live. The school has kept us here and the church … It’s just such a tight-knit community and caring community. We’ve just never found a reason to leave…” Mrs. Norris said.

“Ever since we’ve been here, we didn’t do it for any other reason but the love of the community.”

Norris, 76, added, “We try to stay active.…We’re just going to do whatever we can to keep supporting (Whitehouse).”

As Mr. and Mrs. YesterYear, Norris and his wife will be honored with a tea next month and will ride in the holiday parade in December. Mrs. Norris said they also will be introduced at the Whitehouse chamber banquet.
