Petunias among most popular garden flowers

Old-fashioned and petunia go together like coffee and cream.

Petunias have been in American gardens for who knows how long and continue to be among the most popular flowers. The old petunias grew tall and bloomed prolifically all spring before dying in the heat of summer.

Botanists have worked for years trying to get petunias that perform in the South as well as they do in the North and have finally succeeded with the Wave variety and Laura Bush.

We have been growing Wave petunias for years in the IDEA and Heritage Gardens. These petunias are awesome. They spread 3 to 4 feet or more and bloom constantly until extreme heat when we cut them back some only to have them burst back into bloom as the weather cools in fall.

Laura Bush, another favorite of ours, has the delicious old petunia scent that everyone loves. Laura Bush grows to about 2 feet tall with beautiful magenta blooms, and it blooms right into and through winter as long as the temperature stays above the lower 20s. Although Laura Bush reseeds prolifically, oftentimes the little plants come up during the warm days of winter only to be frozen by a late freeze.

Look for these two varieties as well as Supertunias, Tidal Wave and the VIP varieties if you want them to make it through the hot summers. They come in all colors and some are two-colored. You can’t beat them!
