Dogwood Trails Celebration continues
PALESTINE — An eclectic lineup of attractions is on tap for the second weekend of the 75th annual Dogwood Trails Celebration, ranging from a dulcimer festival and a country music show to bull riding and a musical.
The backdrop for the many festivities is blooming dogwood. Visitors can learn the status of the blooms by clicking on “dogwood bloom watch” on the website, www.texasdogwoodtrails.com. A popular place to view the dogwood is Davey Dogwood Park off Loop 256.
The 12th annual Dulcimer and Old Time Music Festival will feature concerts, workshops and jam sessions in the Museum for East Texas Culture, 400 Micheaux Ave.
The festival will be staged Thursday through Saturday by Jerry and Margaret Wright, of Kennard. It attracts dulcimer and old time music artists from out of state who fill local hotels, motels and restaurants.
The spring performance of the Dogwood Jamboree will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Palestine Civic Center on Texas Highway 19 and Loop 256.
The Branson style music show titled “A Country Connection” will feature several performers including Steve Carpenter, the Bishop Sisters, Mandy Seale, Taylor Heard and others.
Three young artists will compete for the Dogwood Jamboree Talent Search Artist of the Year. The winner Saturday will advance to the finals in December.
The show is sponsored by local businesses and designed as family entertainment, Dan Manuel, producer, said.
At intermission, door prizes donated by local merchants and businesses will be given away.
Palestine Community Theatre will present “Ghosts: The Musical” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Texas Theatre, 217 W. Crawford St.
It is the story of Anna, who inherits a landmark theater, but will lose it unless she can pay the back taxes, but help of a supernatural kind comes when the ghosts of former performers return to lend a hand.

The production will be the first live musical that Sarah Churman, who has been severely hearing impaired since birth, will hear. She received a surgical implant at age 29 that enabled her to hear. Ms. Churman, her husband and their two daughters will be special guests for the opening night performance.
The annual Boston Porter Memorial Bull Riding event will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday at the Anderson County Livestock Pavilion on U.S. Highway 287 North. It will feature Don Gay’s Pro Bull Riding Tour. Proceeds will benefit the Boston Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Judging in Boston’s Buckin Barbecue cook-off will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson County rodeo grounds on U.S. Highway 287 North, sanctioned by Lonestar Barbeque Society.
Boston’s Buckaroos Kid Rodeo will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Anderson County Livestock Pavilion with competition by cowboys and cowgirls in mutton busting, calf riding, stick horse racing and goat dressing.
