An inmate’s death remains under investigation after he was transported from the Anderson County Jail to Palestine Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Saturday.

Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said 50-year-old Jeffrey Mallachi Eastman was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday morning in Elkhart for public intoxication.

Taylor said the man told deputies he was walking around a convenience store looking for his wife, who works at the location.

“We had an EMS unit respond to the scene to check him out, but he refused treatment, so we transported him to jail and booked him in,” he said.

Taylor said the man began having problems and jailers called EMS to transport him to the hospital, where he died.

Taylor said one of his investigators, along with the Texas Rangers, are investigating the death, but it is not believed unordinary or that foul play was involved.

“This man is a probable drug user, and when he was arrested, there was no question that he was not in his right mind due to some type of narcotic. We will know what that substance was when we get the autopsy back,” he said.

Taylor said the man was not intoxicated on alcohol.
