Jarvis celebrates homecoming all week

Jarvis Christian College's Homecoming festivities are in full swing this week, offering events for students and the community that are free to the public.


TODAY
The second Annual Jarvis Christian College Homecoming Pageant will be held today at 7 p.m. in the Meyer Auditorium., where 16 contestants will compete for the titles of Prince and Princess (Freshmen Class); Duke and Duchesses (Sophomore Class); Lord and Lady (Junior Class); and King and Queen (Senior class), according to a news release from the college.

Contestants will compete in five categories: Self-Expression, Q-and-A (Formal Attire), '50s to '60s, '70s to '80s and '90s to today. During the final three segments, students will dress as a celebrity or other recognizable person from that era.
Judges will be present to help select winners.


TUESDAY
At 11 a.m., the Homecoming Convocation featuring journalist George E. Curry will be held in the Smith-Howard Chapel.

Curry is editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association News Service, an award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist, author, moderator, keynote speaker and presenter. He is known best for his work as editor-in-chief of Emerge, a national news magazine that focused on issues of interest to African Americans from 1989 to 2000.

At 7 p.m., “JCC Wild n' Out” will be held at Meyer Auditorium.

Wild n' Out is a high-energy evening of thumping music, high velocity microphones and student-teams performing live skits in front of an audience filled with their peers. The event promotes student creativity, student spontaneity and student personality.


WEDNESDAY
At 8:30 p.m., the men's basketball championship game will be held at the Anthony Robinson Gymnasium. The game will have a slam dunk 3-point “shoot out.” Admission is free to the public.


THURSDAY
At 11 a.m., former board member Dr. Douglas B. Skinner will speak in the Smith-Howard Chapel as part of the J.N. Ervin Lecture Series.

Dr. Skinner has been a leader with Northway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1997, and will speak on “The Idea of a Christian College.” He has served as the moderator of the Christian Church in the Southwest and as the Vice Moderator of the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In addition, Dr. Skinner has served on a variety of boards and task forces. He is involved in the ecumenical partnership, Friendship Among Faiths.

At 7:30 p.m., the UNCF Gospel Extravaganza Featuring Area College Choirs, featuring tree college choirs, will be in the Smith-Howard Chapel.


SATURDAY
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the East Texas Natural Museum will host an open house in Frost Hall.

The event will feature special exhibits of East Texas nature photography, including the Jarvis nature trail by Woodrow Starkey. Mr. Starkey will be on hand to discuss his work. Other exhibits from general collections include fishes of East Texas by Jarvis student Idris Fahmi, Butterflies and moths of East Texas by Jarvis Research Associates Robert Nuelle Jr. and Robert Nuelle III.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. for the President's Inaugural Scholarship 5K Run/Walk on the Jarvis Campus. The race begins at 9 a.m.

Registration is $5 for Jarvis students, $10 for high school and middle school students, $15 for adults and $25 for families of four with an additional $5 per extra member.

At noon, the Blue & Gold Baseball game begins

From 1 to 4 p.m., tailgating will be held in Greek Park.

At 2 p.m., the Jarvis Parade gets under way.


SUNDAY
At 1 a.m., the Founders Worship Service will be held in the Smith-Howard Chapel, featuring Dr. Crystal Williams.
