National Newspaper Publishers Association editor-in-chief to speak at Jarvis College

George E. Curry, editor-in-chief of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) News Service, will deliver the Founders’/Homecoming Convocation speech at Jarvis Christian College on Tuesday.

The event is free and open to the public. Curry will speak at 11 a.m. in the Smith-Howard Chapel on the Jarvis campus, according to a news release from the college.

The award-winning journalist, syndicated columnist, author, moderator, keynote speaker and presenter is known for his work as editor-in-chief of Emerge, a national news magazine that focused on issues of interest to African-Americans from 1989 to 2000, the release states.

Under his leadership, from 1992 to 2000, Emerge won 40 national journalism awards, the release states.

In April 2012, Curry returned to the NNPA News Service as its editor-in-chief. He also held the post from 2001 to 2007, the release states. His range of work has taken him to the Supreme Court to hear oral arguments in the University of Michigan affirmative action cases to Doha, Qatar to report on America’s war with Iraq.

As a journalist, the Alabama native has traveled to Egypt, England, France, Italy, China, Cuba, Germany, Malaysia, Thailand, Brazil, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Mexico, Canada and Austria, the release states.

He has appeared on a dozen television news shows including PBS, CBS Evening News, ABC’s World News Tonight, The Today Show, 20/20, Good Morning America, CNN and several others.

He holds two “Journalist of the Year” awards, an “Excellence in Journalism” award, a Doctor of Humane Letters Degree from Kentucky State University, an Honorary Doctorate from Lane College, a Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism from the University of Missouri (highest honor given by the School of Journalism) and a National Urban Coalition Award, the release states.

The convocation is one of several free events open to the public scheduled March 18 through 24 as part of the College’s Founders’/Homecoming celebration.
