MIDDAY UPDATE: Azalea Trail Opens Friday

Japan marked the second anniversary today of a devastating earthquake and tsunami that left nearly 19,000 people dead or missing, according to an Associated Press report. At memorial observances in Tokyo and towns along the northeastern coast, those gathered marked the moment -- in a moment of silence --- at 2:46 p.m. on March 11, 2011, when the 9.0 earthquake — the strongest recorded in Japan's history — struck off the coast. More than 300,000 people remain displaced by the disasters, and about half of those are evacuees from areas near the wrecked Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant.***

And in case you missed it… during the Tyler Fire Department's 22nd annual awards banquet on Saturday, Reese Hunt was named the Tyler Fire Department's Firefighter of the Year. Hunt is a driver for Fire Station No. 10. Fire Captain Morgan Herron described Hunt as “one of those rare individuals that naturally excels at his job.” And he said, “He arrives to work every day with an attitude and an eagerness that is infectious to all those around him. He truly is the guy that dreamed of becoming a firefighter as a boy.”***

And just a reminder … The Azalea and Spring Flower Trail kicks off this Friday – with a ribbon cutting and opening ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at the historic Pyron home on West Dobbs Street. The trail features 10 miles of azaleas, dogwoods, spring flowers and the ambassadors of the Trail, the Azalea Belles. This year during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Neil Sperry – a noted author, gardening guru and radio personality, will join the Belles and other distinguished community members. ***
