Beyond talk, it’s all about nutrition

We spend a lot of time talking about obesity, weight loss, exercise, calories, fat, etc. While all of those things need to be addressed, it's important not to lose sight of the basic idea that keeps us alive — nutrition.

In our society, we have food available 24/7. On the other end of the spectrum, we are constantly focused on finding the best solutions for weight loss.

In the fight to tackle obesity and chronic illness, are we becoming a malnourished society?

Food manufacturers and restaurants are figuring out that Americans want to eat healthier. In the process, I think we are inadvertently being sold products that promise to help avoid weight gain or that will give us energy. Meanwhile, we're missing out on the nutrients we need and getting extra things we don't need, such as salt, sugar and synthetic preservatives. We simply can't get all the body needs to thrive in a box, by eating out, by skipping meals or by drastically reducing caloric intake.

So, it's back to the basics: eat something green or leafy regularly, eat a variety of colorful, naturally occurring foods, get enough fiber, skimp on the fried and junk food and drink plenty of water. And exercise to that and you are doing all you can to ensure a good quality of life.

If you don't have a problem with overeating, it's OK if you don't track every calorie. If you get back to the basics and are in tune with how your body works, it's not necessary. Find what works for you and it

That is what this year's theme for National Nutrition Month is all about. It is “Eat Right, Your Way and Every Day.”

This observance is set aside every March by the American Dietetic Association to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

These activities have been planned in East Texas in observance of National Nutrition Month:

  • Wednesday: Registered Dietitian Day

  • Wednesday: Healthy Shopping Tour, Brookshire's, Wills Point

  • Thursday: Healthy Shopping Tour, Brookshire's, Van

  • March 29: Nutrition Carnival, NET Health WIC Clinic, 815 N. Broadway, Tyler
