One of the largest day care centers in Van Zandt County will be closed until further notice after a fire sparked sometime this morning, according to the county’s fire marshal.

Fire crews were called to the Little Vandal Day Care on Farm-to-Market Road 314, south of Van, about 11 a.m., Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Chuck Allen said.

Even though the center was closed, firefighters searched the building to make sure there were no children inside while they worked to find the fire in the large structure, Allen said.

The day care center sustained extensive fire, smoke and heat damage but no one was injured.

Allen said the fire appears to be accidental and started in a central resource and store room. Van, Ben Wheeler and Edom volunteer fire departments responded to the scene.

The day care had an enrollment that fluctuated between 50 and 60 children each day, and workers said each parent was contacted. Any parent needing information on the status of the day care center is asked to contact Julie Jackson at 903-590-0035.
