Tyler area employment rate down for second-straight month
The Tyler area’s employment rate dipped for the second consecutive month.
The employment rate for January was 92.8 percent, compared to 93.7 percent in December and 93.9 percent in November, according to figures released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission. The employment rate in Tyler for January 2012 was 92.2 percent.
“The Texas economy continues to add jobs and create opportunity, with growth in all 11 major industries over the last year,” Workforce Commission Chairman Andres Alcantar said in a prepared statement.
The state’s employment rate was higher than Tyler’s and the country’s.
Texas saw an employment rate of 93.1 percent in January, a decrease from 94 percent the month before and an increase from the 92.5 percent seen a year ago.
The nation’s employment rate for January was 91.5 percent, compared to 92.4 percent in December and 91.2 percent in January 2012.

Texas employers beefed up their payrolls in January by adding 10,400 nonfarm jobs, for a total of 310,900 jobs added over the year. The state reported more than 11 million total nonfarm jobs in January, the Workforce Commission reported.
“It’s good to see so many different opportunities continuing to arise here in Texas,” Workforce Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton said. “For example, the Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry alone has grown by nearly 64,000 jobs over the last year. That’s more than any other industry in Texas.”
Eight out of 11 major industries experienced positive growth over the month, with leisure and hospitality hiring 8,900 new employees. The industry added 62,500 jobs over the last year, for a 5.9 percent annual growth rate.
The mining and logging industry, which includes oil and gas related positions, added 19,700 jobs from January 2012 to January, for a 7.6 percent annual growth rate. The construction field expanded by 28,500 jobs over the last year, for a 5 percent annual growth rate.
Private industries in Texas added 15,400 jobs in January, for a total of 304,700 private sector jobs added over the last year.
At 96.6 percent, Midland had the highest employment rate in the state, while at 88.4 percent, the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area had the lowest employment rate.
