Tyler ISD has hired Gretchen Nabi as the Clarkston Elementary School principal.

Mrs. Nabi serves as assistant principal at West Side Elementary School in Jacksonville ISD. She started her education career 16 years ago as a middle school teacher at Teague ISD.

She brings to the district a knowledge of working with at-risk students and has a great repertoire of how to start from the beginning and move students forward, TISD administrators said.

She replaces former Clarkston Principal Kathryn Letsinger, who retired in January. Mrs. Nabi will start March 25.

Mrs. Nabi told board members Thursday the hiring experience “has been an amazing process for me personally, professionally.”

The board voted 6-0 to approve her hire. Board member Eleno Licea was absent.

“Thank you for the vote of confidence,” she said. “I’m so excited. There’s not even vocabulary words to express that, but I’m so, so excited.”

In other business, the board certified the unopposed candidates in Single Member Districts 1, 3 and 6 and canceled the May 11 election for those positions.

Tyler businessman Wade Washmon filed for the District 1 position. Jean Washington, a retired teacher, filed for the District 3 position. And the Rev. Dr. Marty Dunbar, associate pastor at Marvin United Methodist Church, filed for District 6.

The trustees likely will not take office until June, or after the regular election canvassing period would have taken place.
