A new housing option is coming to Whitehouse.

The city council recently gave the go-ahead for a zone change from high-density retail to high-density residential, allowing for construction of townhouse rentals in the 600 block of Texas Highway 110 south. The townhouses are set to be built between the intersection of Texas Highway 110 south and Hagan Road and Cain Elementary School.

Planning and Zoning Commission member Angela Klein described them as similar to "some of the townhomes you see on the East Coast."

She said each two-story structure will be 1,200 to 1,400 square feet with a small front yard and "nice looking amenities on them."

"They're going to be very, very nice. I think they're going to add a lot to the look of the community..." Ms. Klein said. "They have a really unique look to them -- a really fresh kind of look."

Ms. Klein estimated that groundbreaking could happen as early as this month or next month.

Whitehouse Councilman Mike Jeter called the project a "positive growth move for the city" and said the townhouses will fit in with other rental units.
