UPDATE: Tyler man accused of assaulting elderly man has been identified

The man who allegedly assaulted an elderly man and employee at the Super Monterey grocery store has been identified as 46-year-old Gerardo Bastida, of Tyler.
He was booked into the Smith County jail on Saturday on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and his bond was set at $50,000 for the two charges.ORIGINAL POST
A 46-year-old Tyler man remained in jail Sunday afternoon after allegedly assaulting an elderly man and stabbing a local grocery store employee Saturday.
A large fight broke out at the Super Monterey grocery store, 510 SSW Loop 323, at 11:43 a.m. Saturday, according to a news release from the department.
The man is accused of hitting an elderly man with a crutch inside the store, whose head was bleeding when officers arrived, the release states.
A store employee attempted to stop the assault and was stabbed in the left leg by the 46-year-old man, the release states.
Store employees had the man detained by the time officers arrived. He was booked into the Smith County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.
As of press time, the man was not arraigned, and his bond had not been set.
