TJC speech, debate team takes state

The Tyler Junior College speech and debate team recently was named state champions at the Texas Community College Forensic Championship Tournament.

About 100 students from seven community colleges competed at the tournament held in February in Killeen.

The team earned first place in Overall Sweepstakes and Individual Events Sweepstakes, along with third place in Debate Sweepstakes, according to a TJC news release.

Students also did well in the individual categories. Tom Hill, of Lindale, won first place for Top Overall Speaker.

Deshawn Weston, of Grand Prairie, received second place for Overall Speaker and first place in Individual Events Speaker, according to the news release.

First-place awards: Tom Hill and Julia Bodiford, of Lindale, Parliamentary Debate; Tom Hill, Impromptu Speaking; Weston, Poetry Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation; Demetries Coad, of South Grand Prairie, Dramatic Interpretation; Tom Hill and Theresa Boyd, of Tyler, tied for first place in Speech to Entertain.

Second-place awards: Mae Rose Hill, of Tyler, and Weston, Duo Interpretation; Ms. Bodiford, Program Oral Interpretation; and Tom Hill, Extemporaneous Speaking.

Third-place awards: Weston, Dramatic Interpretation; Jonathan Clifton, of Gilmer, NFA Lincoln Douglas Debate; Ms. Bodiford, Prose Interpretation; and Ms. Boyd, Poetry Interpretation.

Fourth-place awards: Mae Rose Hill, Dramatic Interpretation and Clifton, Communication Analysis.

Fifth-place award: Josh Benstowe, of Trinity, Impromptu Speaking.

The speech and debate team director is M'Liss Hindman and assistant director is Joan Andrews.
