Center for Independent Living earns recognition
Staff Reports

The East Texas Center for Independent Living (ETCIL) will be recognized statewide with the Exceptional Contribution by a Center for Independent Living award at the Texas Statewide Independent Living Conference on Monday.

“It is an honor to serve East Texas,” said ETCIL executive director Laura Mattheis in a news release. “We greatly appreciate the collaborative partnerships which continue to be developed.

“These allow us to realize our collective mission of reducing barriers to independence for the one in five East Texans who have a disability of some kind. We are fortunate to be a part of this East Texas community which genuinely cares for all citizens.”

ETCIL core services are focused in 13 primary counties, and additional programs serve up to 23 East Texas counties. Program services include consumer-directed independent living skills training, resource advocacy, representative payee, nursing home relocation, and deaf and hard of hearing services.

The organization was nominated for the award by East Texas community partners with the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services.
