Cooks with a fetish for chili turned out Saturday for the 32nd Rose City Chili Cook-Off at Gander Mountain sporting goods store.

Forty-five chili batches were turned in to be judged and about 700 people came to the cook-off, Blu Monday-Daniels, cook-off coordinator, said.

Rose City Chili Pod and Rotary Club of Tyler held the event that drew cooks from Tyler, Houston, Shreveport, Garland, Carroll, Ben Wheeler and other cities.

“Our mission statement is to cook chili for charity and fun,” Ms. Monday-Daniels said.

“One reason why a lot of cooks come out,” she said, is they were trying to win points in the cook-off sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International to be eligible to compete in the international championship in Terlingua.

“Another main reason (chili cookers participated) is that it's all for charity,” Ms. Monday-Daniels said.

The event raised money to benefit Rotary Club projects and East Texas Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The public could sample the chili for a $5 donation and vote for the People's Choice winner.

Anybody could cook chili but they had to follow rules of the Chili Appreciation Society International. One of the main rules was that the chili had to be made from scratch on-site the day of the cook-off and have no fillers.

Criteria that judges looked for included aroma, red color, consistency, taste and after-taste.
