Today is final day to file for city, school positions
Today is the last day to file for candidacy in city and school elections this May.
Residents have until April 11 to register to vote.
The May 11 elections include races and local options within cities and school districts, including races for city council, the legalization of beer and wine sales in Whitehouse and a $160.5 million bond proposal for TISD.
Smith County Elections Administrator Karen Nelson said she expects to have a complete list of candidates and local-option proposals Monday.
Residents can register to vote at the Smith County Elections Office, 302 E. Ferguson St., in Tyler.
For Tyler City Council positions, the last day to file for districts 1, 3, or 5 is today. However, the last day to file for a place on the special election ballot for District 6 is March 11, according to the city's website.
All candidates for Tyler City Council must register with the City Clerk's Office, which is on the first floor of Tyler City Hall, 212 N. Bonner Ave. The office closes is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
City council members serve two-year terms with a three-consecutive term limit, according to the city website. The position is unpaid.
To serve on the council, a person must be a qualified voter in the city, have lived in the district they want to represent for at least six months prior to the election, continue to live in the district during their term and not be indebted to city in regard to taxes or any other liabilities, according to the city website.
People interested in applying for the TISD board of trustees can do so in person from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Applications should be filed at the board secretary's office in the TISD Administration Building, 1319 Earl Campbell Parkway.
Trustees serve three-year terms, and the position is unpaid.
Candidates must be a qualified voter, must have lived in Texas for 12 months and must have lived in the district they want to represent for at least six months.
