Tyler native and businessman Wade Washmon filed to run for a seat on the Tyler ISD school board.

Washmon, 31, is vying for the District 1 position. Eleno Licea, who holds the position, has chosen not to run for re-election once his term is up in May.

Washmon is vice president of B.W. Energy Consultants Inc., an oil and gas land services company started by his father.

With one child and another on the way, Washmon said his children are going to be starting school in the next few years.

"Education's very important to me, and Tyler ISD is very important to me," he said of the reason he chose to run.

Washmon said he could be part of some really good changes and bring some young energy and fresh ideas to the board.

He described himself as a reasonable person who values relationships, and said those qualities would serve him well if elected to the board. He said he also values the opportunity to give back to his community.

"I'm really proud of my hometown," he said. "I think we should be excellent in every aspect, and I think education is definitely one of those aspects."

Washmon attended Clarkston Elementary School, Moore Middle School and Robert E. Lee High School.

After graduating in 1999, he went to Baylor University where he earned a degree in business management and business broadcasting.

Washmon is married to Ashley and they have a 4-year-old son, Vann, and another child on the way. The family attends Green Acres Baptist Church.
