Benedict XVI to end term as pope today; Tyler Catholics to hold prayer service
Pope Benedict XVI’s term will officially end at 8 p.m. Roman time, or 1 p.m. local time, today.
At that hour, the bells of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler will be rung for eight consecutive minutes in honor of the eight years Benedict XVI sat on the Throne of St. Peter and led the Catholic Church.
After the eight minutes, Fr. Anthony McLaughlin, rector of the Cathedral, will lead a brief prayer service to give thanks to God for the service of the pope, and to ask the Holy Spirit to guide the Cardinal-Electors as they gather in Rome to elect a new Supreme Pontiff.
