Roses to a Tyler police officer who came to need of reader's husband after wreck
ROSES: I would like to send roses to Tyler police officer K. Allen. He went above and beyond when he assisted my husband at an auto wreck in Tyler on Feb. 13. He was a tremendous help and so caring. Police officers do not get enough praise for all they do.

Pleasant exception
RAVES: When new projects and enterprises begin, we are all too familiar with the hype and jazz and unrealistic expectations they bring. A pleasant exception to this is a special new charter school in Tyler, Vista Academy, which opened its doors in August 2012. We have found the school’s ideology to be reasonable, balanced and yet highly motivated.
The emphasis is not just education, but character — values such as gratefulness, orderliness and generosity. We had been to other school orientations and had heard this familiar mantra, but Vista has held true to its goal. We have three children attending the school and one more who is enrolled for next year. We are really happy with how they are doing. The schedule that the children have encourages success. Hard work is recognized and rewarded and students’ areas of weakness are targeted for improvement. Bad behavior towards the staff or other students is not tolerated and removal from school is a real possibility (not an empty threat) for repeat offenders.
I believe Vista teachers take a real interest in our children and always are pleasant and personable. Mr. Garcia is a principal of real gifts. It is obvious that mere administration is not the most important thing to him. He takes a personal and enthusiastic interest in the children — and is a gentleman whom I would say is really “present” with the children.
So, our Raves go to Vista Academy in Tyler.
