Best-selling author Charles Wheelan to speak at dinner

The University of Texas at Tyler Alumni Association will recognize five graduates during this year’s Alumni and Friends Awards Gala.
The University of Texas at Tyler Alumni Association will recognize five graduates during this year’s Alumni and Friends Awards Gala.
The gala will begin with an Alumni and Friends Reception at 6:30 p.m. March 22 at the UT Tyler Ornelas Activity Center, according to a university news release. The dinner and program will follow.
Best-selling author Charles Wheelan, author of “10 1/2 Things No Commencement Speaker Has Ever Said” and “Naked Economics” will be the speaker.
Wheelan writes Yahoo!’s “Naked Economics” column and contributes to National Public Radio, according to the news release.
This year’s distinguished alumni honorees are Dr. Kenneth Hall, Jimmy Peņa, S. Glynn Roberts and Bryan Hughes. Deborah Tinsley is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented to alumni who have set themselves apart in their professional achievements, contributions to society and support of the university, according to the news release.
The Distinguished Alumni Service Award recognizes the contributions individuals make to others. It honors someone who has demonstrated a high level of commitment and serves as a supreme example, inspiring people to help others, according to the news release.
Hall earned a bachelor’s degree in history from UT Tyler in 1974 as a member of the first graduating class. At that time, the school was Tyler State College.
He is president emeritus of Buckner International, a nonprofit organization that works to make life better for orphans, vulnerable children and families, according to its website.
Baylor University recently named him senior vice president for university development and strategic initiatives, according to the news release.
Peņa earned a master’s degree in kinesiology from UT Tyler in 1998.

Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree in economics with cum laude distinction from UT Tyler in 1992.
He is the District 5 representative in the Texas House of Representatives and is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Natural Resources, Business and Economic Development and Regulatory Agencies, according to the news release.
Ms. Tinsley earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from UT Tyler in 1993.
A registered nurse, she is the owner of Exceptional Home Care, which provides pediatric home health care to people in East Texas and North Central Texas with a corporate office in Tyler, according to its website.
This event is open to the public. Tickets cost $50 with tables of eight costing $500, and VIP Sponsor tables costing $1,000. Reservations are required by March 15. Proceeds will benefit the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Endowment Fund.
