Eleven East Texas students received scholarships Friday during the Academic Rodeo Awards Celebration.
More than 1,200 students participated in this year’s event. Students in public, private and home schools as well as area organizations take part.
All events took place on the East Texas State Fairgrounds, with the majority of contests held in January and February, according to the news release.
Middle and high school students, who placed first through third in any of the 14 contests, were eligible to apply for one of the scholarship awards.
Scholarship recipients receive a certificate and bank the scholarship until they enter college, according to the news release.
A sixth-grader can win up to seven scholarships if they continue to compete in Academic Rodeo through their middle and high school years.
The East Texas State Fair has offered $413,000 in scholarships since 1992, according to the news release.
This year’s middle school scholarship recipients are: Travis Brown, Lindale Junior High School; Laura Ashley Childress, Henderson County 4-H; Hailey Holland, Lindale Junior High School; Jonathan McWhorter, Lindale Junior High School; Hayden Rasure, TISD Moore MST Magnet School; and Joseph “Mack” Stroupe, Arp Junior High School (second win).
This year’s high school scholarship recipients are: Dakota Maradiago, Lindale High School; Maggie McAdams, East Texas Christian Academy (third win); Caitlin Reed, New Diana High School; McKinley Terry, Chapel Hill High School, Mt. Pleasant; and Stoker Williams, Arp High School (third win).
