Ain't no stopping you now

Lighten Up East Texas participants have reached the halfway point, and we’re hearing some great stories out there. Since the last count of the Lighten Up contest, East Texans have shed nearly 900 pounds.

People really are excited about changing their lives for the better, and it’s happening everywhere, not just in East Texas.

Just last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said American children are consuming fewer calories. Whether that translates into a drop in childhood obesity rates is yet to be determined, but it’s a start.

While Lighten Up is halfway over, it’s also just a start. It’s the start of a new way of looking at health.

Be very conscious of the changes you are making and how you are feeling. The way you get the weight off should sustain you throughout life.

Contests are exciting. You have accountability because you don’t want to fail in front of others, or you are incentivized to win a prize or recognition. While that is all helpful, don’t let it be your only motivator. When the excitement is over, what will keep you from reverting to bad habits?

It’s very easy to become complacent when people reach their goals, but if you keep in mind that the main goal will always be to have good health and good quality of life, then you’ll win, no matter if you get a prize or not.

Around this time each year, the elusive New Year’s resolution usually slips away from many people, as goals get too intimidating or the rigors of life pull them from maintaining healthy changes.

If you’ve lost weight, shrunk a few inches around the waist or gotten off medication, don’t stop now. Keep going and share with others what you are doing.

Since November, we’ve invited people to share their progress, setbacks, photos and questions on Lighten Up and Fit City Challenge’s Facebook pages. If you have an amazing weight loss or health story, we’d love to hear it.
