Jennifer and John Ebenger have made a habit of blending in with the locals when visiting a new city. And Friday was no different.

The Cleveland couple were among the people perusing the exhibits at the Tyler Area Builders Association's 33rd Annual Home Products Show.

The show, which continues through Sunday at Harvey Convention Center, features 95 exhibitors displaying the latest products and services related to homes and building. There's lighting, flooring, insulation, plumbing, appliances, home entertainment systems and more.

“Home shows are always good …” Ebenger, 66, a retired firefighter, said. “There (are) a lot of great ideas here.”

Libby Simmons, executive vice president of the Tyler Area Builders Association, said outdoor living spaces are very popular as is technology that allows people to control different aspects of their home such as lighting, thermostat and entertainment from their phone.

“We want to display all our members, but we want to provide the public with all the tools they might need to remodel or build their homes,” she said.

That's exactly why the Hearns came out. Susan Hearn said they've lived in their Tyler house for 13 years and plan to remodel the flooring and kitchen area.

They said they had found several products to meet their needs. The couple said the benefit of the event is that it provides a one-stop shop.

“You can cover all areas of home improvement in one evening,” Mrs. Hearn, 53, an accountant, said. “It gives you a lot of ideas.”

Jion Dietz, of Fixture This Inc., talked to attendees about lighting ideas for inside and outside homes.

Ms. Dietz said this is the company's 10th year at the event. She said it helps to build the walk-in and retail traffic for the business.

Kevin Sheehan with Satterwhite Log Homes in Longview told visitors about the homes and materials the company can provide.

“It's getting the visual for people to see,” he said of the value of the event. “A lot of people don't realize the public can buy from us.”

Mundt Music, of Longview, catered to the technology lovers. The company had almost an entire room to itself with televisions and sound systems for home theaters on display.

David Gilbert, a designer with the company, said media rooms always have been popular, but today it's the ability to control everything be it entertainment, thermostats and lighting from the phone.

The company can install pads in the wall that serve as a central controller for multiple systems in the house.

“We've learned that (with) most people that's popular, to integrate all these types of devices, (because) you're walking around with a remote in your pocket now,” he said.

The show continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets cost $5 for adults. Children 12 and younger are free. Seminars are included with admission price.
