Entries accepted for Rose City Chili Cookoff

Entries are now being accepted for the 32nd annual Rose City Chili Cook-off, to be held March 2 and 3.

The event will benefit local Rotary Club projects and the East Texas Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The event will be at Gander Mountain sporting goods store on U.S. Highway 69 South.

Entry fee is $20; a sampling should be turned in to judges by 2 p.m. Chili will be judged on aroma, red color, consistency, taste and aftertaste, according to Chili Appreciation Society International (CASI) rules.

The Junior’s Chili (ages 7 to 17) contest is a $10 entry fee. Sampling should be turned in at 1 p.m. and must follow CASI rules. Trophies will be given to the top three.

The beans contest is a $10 entry fee, a sample should be turned in at noon.

Showmanship for CASI cooks will be judged on theme, costumes, booth decorations, action and audience participation.

People’s Choice chili has no rules and may be prepared using any recipe. Those who wish to vote must purchase tasting cups for $5 per cup. Cups are available for purchase until 11 a.m. Chili cooks are encouraged to have extra chili for the People’s Choice.

Overnight parking for RVs and camping without hook-ups are available Friday and Saturday. Event T-shirts and goody bags are guaranteed to the first 50 CASI chili entries.

Preregistrations may be mailed to Rose City Chili Pod, 10358 CR 3101, Winona, 75792, postmarked no later than Feb. 25.

Registration will open at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, with the cook’s meeting to follow at 10 a.m.

Concessions are provided by Rotary Club of Tyler.

The 2012 Terlingua International Chili Champion, T.J. Cannon, will be in attendance, sponsored by Country Inn and Suites of Tyler.
