Building Better Brains through Movement is the theme of the 2013 Brighter Future Symposium.

Building Better Brains through Movement is the theme of the 2013 Brighter Future Symposium.
The event, put on by Smith County Champions for Children, is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at The University of Texas at Tyler Ornelas Activity Center, 3402 Old Omen Road. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
Jean Blaydes Madigan will be the speaker. Ms. Madigan is an internationally known education consultant, speaker and author on the subject of how brain research supports the link between movement and enhanced learning, according to a provided biography.
A former educator, she taught in the classroom, as a physical education teacher and a college professor throughout her career, according to the bio.
The event is open to parents, teachers, counselors and social workers. Special education instructors, behavioral specialists, and occupational, physical and speech therapists also can attend.
Betsy Jenkins, a mother and committee member who is helping to put on the symposium, said the goal of the event is to help teachers and others learn how to integrate movement into their work with children.
“We’re just trying to get as many educators on board with this as we can,” she said.
MaryAnn Girard, executive director of Smith County Champions for Children, said participants will hear information and participate in hands-on activities that will equip them to improve children’s learning.
“It’s nontraditional in the sense that it’s movement based,” Ms. Girard said.
The conference costs $50. The price includes lunch from FRESH by Brookshire’s and the book, “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain.”
Occupational therapists, physical therapists, teachers, licensed professional counselors and social workers can receive continuing education units for attending.
