Pilot Club celebrates 75 years of community service

The Pilot Club of Tyler is marking a milestone anniversary — it was established here 75 years ago and ever since has been finding ways to help people.

The Pilot Club of Tyler is marking a milestone anniversary — it was established here 75 years ago and ever since has been finding ways to help people.
Club members continue to provide financial and volunteer support to programs that help people dealing with brain-related injuries and illnesses and promote awareness of brain-related disorders.
The Pilot Club works closely with organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, National Organization on Disability, Brain Injury Association and National Mental Health Association.
In 1952, Pilot established the Anchor Club as a service organization for young people.
Today, the international organization has more than 25,000 members in the United States and several foreign countries.
Here in Tyler, club members give ongoing support to many worthy causes including the Alzheimer’s Alliance’s Project Life Saver, Tyler Day Nursery, the Literacy Council of Tyler and Corporate Spelling Bee, according to information from Terri Paige, its president-elect.
Tyler Pilot Club also raises money to send kids, and in some cases even adults, to summer camps catering to those with special needs and brain injuries.
That’s a lot of community-service outreach and a lot of reasons for all of us to tell club members past and present “thank you for all you do.”
We will have an opportunity to do that when the club celebrates its 75th anniversary from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 at First Assembly of God Church, 5309 Rhones Quarter Road.
The Pilot Club gets its name and inspiration from the river boat pilots of the early 1900s who were admired for their ability to steer a true course through challenging conditions and obstacles.
I hope the Pilot Club remains true to its course for many years to come. Happy anniversary.
