Native Tylerite Sam Mezayek filed the paperwork Wednesday to run for his third and final term as city councilman for District 1.

Mezayek, 46, has represented that district for two terms on the council, but cannot run again after serving a third term because of term limits, he said.

As a councilman, “I am the most proud of helping citizens to resolve issues,” he said.

He has owned Mezayek Building in Tyler for 20 years, and said he tries to operate the city as a business.

“I consider each citizen to be a customer of the city,” Mezayek said.

Mezayek said his district, roughly between Old Jacksonville Road and Broadway, grew the most of all of the city districts, based on the 2010 U.S. Census.

He said he is most excited about some of the upcoming ideas and projects on the horizon for Tyler.

“It’s exciting to think about the hotel convention center and about road infrastructures such as the Cumberland Road extension,” he said.

Construction on that project is set to begin in June 2014.

Mezayek added that the idea of a possible entertainment arena in Tyler is interesting.

Mezayek said he is proud of the good working relationship that the mayor and city council have.

“We all work together so well,” he said.

He and his wife Diane have been married for 17 1/2 years, and they have a son, Michael, who is 13. Mezayek is active in the community and serves on the East Texas Area Council for Boy Scouts and the Tyler Sister Cities Board.
