Mark Whatley, who represents District 5 East, filed his intention to run for his second full city council term on Jan. 30.

Whatley, 52, and originally from Athens, has lived in Tyler for 28 years, he said. He was elected in November 2009 to serve the unexpired term of Nathaniel Moran. Whatley is a commercial real estate broker and has worked for Burns Commercial Properties since 1992.

“I am most proud of keeping the city’s fiscal house in order, not raising taxes and keeping the budgets balanced,” Whatley said of the time he has served as a councilman.

He said he is proud of the council’s work with other communities in the county during his previous terms. “I think we should be able to work together for the good of all,” Whatley said.

Whatley said he wants to continue more of the same for his next term. “I want to continue the route we’re going and encourage business growth by bringing new businesses here,” he said.

Whatley and his wife, Sherri, have one daughter, Audrey, who is a sophomore in college. He has been a member of the East Texas Crisis Center Board, the Tyler Men’s Bible Study Fellowship, and the Texas Tech Alumni Association.
