An heir of Louis XV from the seed of Phillipe Starck’s genius

Evanescent, crystalline and reflective, with icy surfaces that have edges that intensify light — these characteristics of Lucite furniture have made plastic a clear choice of many designers.

Placed in a room, Lucite pieces resonate, lightly materializing when a contrasting object is placed on or near them.

The presence of Lucite in a design scheme reads like an apparition, a spirit in a material world. It’s there and it isn’t — a quicksilver form brought into focus and grounded by natural materials.

It is said true love is like a psychic experience. Everyone tells ghost stories, but few have ever seen a ghost.

Love elusive Lucite and dare to leap into a spatial void. See a ghost in a Louis XV style chair of transparent and colored polycarbonate.

Designed by Phillipe Starck in 2002, the Louis Ghost chair takes its form from the Louis XV fauteuils. The baroque chair was extravagant in form and light and graceful with curves and carved embellishments.

The plastic likeness of the Louis XV chair, made possible by the creative genius of Starck and the manufacturer’s (Kartell) competence, is both an engineering feat and a postmodern triumph.

The Louis Ghost, a charismatic piece with great aesthetic appeal, is scratch and weather resistant — and can be stacked six chairs high.

The chair “has a mix of materials and styles based on our shared memories. We all own this piece in a way. The chair is well balanced; I try to be balanced myself,” Starck said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

So, search your psyche and you might see a Louis Ghost staring back at you. And have faith your new passion for plastic is well-founded.

Consider this chair. It entertains visually as an accent or conversation piece, but asserts itself when placed into a functional context.

Lucite is a strong, versatile material, and purchasing a Louis Ghost chair is a sound investment in a classic work of art.
