Lindale restaurant offers unique combo

It's been 30 years since George Berry worked in the restaurant business, but he never gave up on his dream of opening his own eatery.

It's been 30 years since George Berry worked in the restaurant business, but he never gave up on his dream of opening his own eatery.
Berry, 64, of Lindale, has brought two Texas staples — doughnuts and barbecue — to one restaurant, Dixie Pig Donuts & BBQ, to his hometown.
He said he always has wanted his own restaurant.

His silent partners for the barbecue side of the business have a restaurant in Forney, and his partner for the dooughnut shop, Tawni Spencer, has 14 years in the business, he said. Ms. Spencer's mother also has worked in the restaurant industry nearly all of her life, he added.
All of the barbecue, including brisket, chicken, hot links, pulled pork and ribs, is homecooked. The same goes for the breakfast side of the business, which includes donuts, chopped beef burritos, pigs in a blanket, breakfast tacos, biscuits and croissants.
Berry believes the quality of the food is what sets it apart from other restaurants. And they offer free beans with every order, he added.
Dub's Barbecue was housed in the space, at 2610 S. Main St. in Lindale, for years before closing down a few months ago.
Berry said the barbecue joint “had tremendous business.”
Berry said when he discovered the building was available, he saw it as a perfect opportunity to open both a doughnut and barbecue restaurant.
Berry said he remodeled the inside of the building and they have opened a drive-thru window. Dixie Pig has six employees.
“It's picking up every day. It's getting better,” he said about business. “It's a real good product. We expect it to do good.”
Berry grew up in East Texas and moved back about two years ago from Rockwall.
