Tip leads to capture of armed robbery suspect
Staff Reports

A Crimestoppers tip led Tyler police and U.S. marshals to a man wanted for an armed robbery in January.

Don Martin, Tyler police spokesman, said the Tyler Police Department received a Smith County Crime Stopper tip Thursday on the whereabouts of Ashad Rael Coats, 25.

Martin said Tyler detectives, along with the U.S. Marshal agents, located and arrested Coats at Town Park Apartments, 2202 WNW Loop 323.

Coats was sought since the Jan. 16 robbery of the Food Fast - Exxon, 4201 University Blvd.

After the robbery, one of the suspects shot himself in the leg while trying to evade police.

Coats remained jailed Friday on bonds totaling $350,000 for charges of aggravated robbery, engaging in organized criminal activity and burglary of a vehicle.
