UPDATE: Victim of fatal shooting at Broadway Square Mall identified; suspect in police custody

The victim of a Saturday morning fatal shooting outside Broadway Square Mall has been identified as Chris Mass, 23 of Tyler. The suspected shooter is Ricky Neal Jr., 25 of Henderson, according to Don Martin Tyler Police Public Information Officer.

Neal is being charged with first degree murder.

According to Martin, Mass was at the scene to aid a friend and make sure an argument, which started in a shoe store inside the mall, did not escalate any further.

It seems Neal was accused of contacted another man's girlfriend through the social media platform Twitter, Martin said.

When two men went to Neal, who had left the store and returned to his vehicle, came out to resume the quarrel Neal started firing a weapon at them, Martin said.

Tyler Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happen at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday outside the Broadway Square Mall on South Broadway in Tyler.

The shooting was a result of a confrontation which started in Champs Shoes and then spilled into the mall parking lot outside the JC Penney entrance, according to Don Martin, Tyler Police Public Information Officer.

Martin said a man went into the store to make a purchase and was confronted by 3 to 4 males. The man left the store, returned to his car, and asked his girlfriend, who was waiting in the car, to make the purchase for him. While the girlfriend was in the mall, two males, from the earlier confrontation went to the parking lot and resumed the earlier argument.
The man in the car brandished a weapon and shot one of the males, Martin said.

The police are investigating whether the Castle Law is in effect in this incident.

The Castle Law allows a citizen to use force to defend themselves in their homes. Texas extended the law to include a person's vehicle.

The suspected shooter is in police custody.

Martin said the victim is a 23-year-old Tyler resident.

No names have been released until next of kin have been notified.

After the shooting, A family member of the deceased jumped the crime scene barrier to get at the body. Tyler Police arrested the man and charged him with interfering with an investigation, Martin said.

The Tyler Police crime scene technicians are at the scene gathering evidence.

The JC Penney entrance is closed because of the police investigation, but the Broadway Square Mall remains open.
