Tyler Valentine's Day event slated to protest domestic abuse
Staff Reports

A local organization is inviting women, men and children to celebrate Valentine's Day by dancing midday in the center of Tyler to protest domestic abuse and violence against women.

Tyler Rose's Rising will join with activists across the globe for ONE BILLION RISING, the largest day of action in the history of V-Day, which is the global activist movement to end violence against women and girls, according to a news release.

According to the organization, one in three women on the planet will be beaten or raped during their lifetime, equating to one billion women worldwide.

A group will gather at 12:30 p.m. in the T.B. Butler Fountain Plaza in downtown Tyler to protest the staggering statistics and raise funds and awareness, the news release states. Participants also can receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.

In its 14th year, the V-Day activist movement works to end violence against women and bring awareness through productions of its funder Eve Ensler's play, "The Vagina Monologues," and other artistic works, the release states.

To date, the organization has raised more than $90 million for the cause, the release states.

"When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against wo-men," Ms. Ensler said in the release. "Now, we are ... stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013, to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up."
