Staff Reports

A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon, accused of assaulting his girlfriend and fleeing from officers.

The Smith County Sheriff's Office was called to the 1300 block of County Road 285, near New Chapel Hill, at 1:35 p.m. after the reported assault, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The man fled into a wooded area behind the home, according to the release. Officers from the county and Whitehouse Police Department searched the area using a tracking dog.

The man was spotted re-entering the home. Officers forced entry into the home and apprehended the man who is accused of initially resisting officers, the release states. The man is accused of evading officers in the past and had an outstanding warrant.

He was booked into the Smith County jail and charged with evading arrest, a class B misdemeanor. His bond was set at $75,000.

Sheriff Larry Smith said the man has not been charged with assault and was unsure whether the charges would equate to a felony.

The case remains under investigation.
