Conversation on race relations slated for UT Tyler today
Staff Reports

“An Honest Conversation on Race,” is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in the Ornelas Activity Center, 3500 Old Omen Road in Tyler.

The free event is open to the public and is put on by the College Constitutional Conservatives at The University of Texas at Tyler.

It will feature a panel with the Rev. C.L. Bryant, Dr. Davor Jedlicka and the Rev. Charles Burns.

Bryant is a Baptist minister, nationally prominent black conservative and creator of the recently released documentary, “Runaway Slave,” according to information provided by the university about the event.

Jedlicka is a UT Tyler sociology professor, and Burns is pastor of Tyler's New Zion #1 Baptist Church.

Natalie Wade, College Constitutional Conservatives president, said the event is designed to give students and young people an opportunity to openly discuss race and think about the issue.

“We wanted to hopefully put something on for the whole community to come to, but not just be biased to our point of view,” she said.

Ms. Wade said her student organization came up with five questions to ask.

At least one of them addresses race in history, and others ask panelists to comment on current events.

The first half of the event will be dedicated to answering those questions followed by a Q-and-A time for audience members, with priority given to college students and young people in attendance.
