Tyler Chamber holds job-shadowing event
High school students from across East Texas took part in a job shadowing program Wednesday, facilitated by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce.
"We do this for two reasons," said Henry Bell, chief operating officer for the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. "It helps both educators and businesses. Students learn the Tyler market, and businesses need employees. In the past, these students have gotten summer internships and could even start their careers."
Pine Cove Christian Camp in Tyler was one of the businesses where students shadowed.
"I thought this was what I wanted to do to begin with," Whitehouse High School student Taylor Balderas said. "Being in the meetings today and talking with (Brett Brewers, event coordinator for Pine Cove Christian Camp), it just seemed like this is something I really want to do, which is what I was already thinking, but this just solidified it."
Students Vanessa Rodriguez, a senior at John Tyler High School, and Caleb Gonzalez, a junior at Whitehouse High School, spent time learning about the media department at Pine Cove -- from graphic design to video production.
"Showing us what we want to do made me want to do it even more," Ms. Rodriguez said.

This is the 12th year the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the program, Bell said.
Participating schools included: Arp High School, Brook Hill School, Bullard High School, Chapel Hill High School, Christian Heritage School, East Texas Christian Academy, Grace Community School, John Tyler High School, Lindale High School, Robert E. Lee High School, Troup High School, T.K. Gorman Catholic School, Whitehouse High School and Winona High School.
