Let the bicycles share Loop 49 and other safe roads, February 6
I join others in thanking the board of Northeast Texas Regional Mobility Authority (NETRMA) for listening to citizens in support of bicycles on Loop 49. The two main reasons I see to keep Loop 49 open for bicycles are safety and the support of the Tyler Fit City challenge (fitcitytyler.com).

From every comment I’ve heard, Loop 49 is the safest road for bike riders. A few years ago I was almost killed on SH 64 when a speeding truck darted across oncoming traffic and broadsided me. By God’s grace, I only sustained three compound fractures, six weeks in the hospital and months of therapy.

The Texas Drivers Handbook says, “The most common motorist caused car-bicycle crash is a motorist turning left in the face of oncoming bicycle traffic.” This dangerous scenario does not exist for bike riders on Loop 49.

I agree with Bob Gaddy’s opinion in a recent letter that “more tragic deaths will occur each year as a result of the complications of obesity and inactivity than will ever happen with bike riders on Loop 49.” The motto for the Fit City Challenge is “Making Tyler a FIT CITY one step, one bite and one health-conscious decision at a time.”

Let’s encourage the NETRMA board to make the decision in favor of bicycles on Loop 49 around Tyler.
