Two Kilgore ISD students were killed and one 2011 graduate of the district was injured Sunday in a wreck on U.S. Highway 259 north of Henderson, Superintendent Dennis Williams said Monday.

One of the students killed was an eighth-grade female student who attended class at Maude Laird Middle School, was a tennis player, a library aide and an honor student, Williams said. The 11th grade female student killed attended Kilgore High School and was involved in track, soccer and cross country running, he said.

A 2011 male graduate of Kilgore High School inside the car was injured, Williams said.

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Trooper Jean Dark said dead at the scene was Liradone Bojkaj, a 14-year-old girl partially ejected and a 17-year-old female, Mergimatare Bojkaj, who was pronounced dead at East Texas Medical Center.

A 19-year-old male, Murteza Bojkaj, was injured, Trooper Dark said.

The 33-year-old driver, Hava Shala, was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Henderson with injuries, and Bennie Shala, 37, a male passenger, also was injured.

He said grief counseling is being offered at the district’s campuses.

Trooper Dark said five people were traveling north on U.S. Highway 259, about three miles north of Henderson, in a 2001 Honda CRV when it overturned on a grassy median and ejected two of the passengers. Another was partially ejected, she said.

“They swerved to avoid an object in the roadway, and the driver lost control,” she said Monday. She added that the investigation is still ongoing, and the report is not yet complete.
