At least 2,804 participants have registered in The Fit City Challenge’s Lighten Up East Texas — a regional weight loss contest.
Among those, 174 people have reported a weight loss of 880.6 pounds lost so far. The weight tracker, at www.tylerweighttracker .com, allows participants to track their progress, as well as the progress of other individuals and teams.
Fit City Coalition members said Thursday during a regular meeting that the tracker is simply a tool for personal goals and friendly competition. The winners of the contest will be determined only by subtracting their final weight from beginning weight.
Coalition members Thursday also heard from the newly formed Fit City Action Team, who will be available in the community for nutrition and exercise advice. Kelly Hitchcock and Christy Richbourg, look to include others on the team who are interested in helping the community find practical ways to create a healthier lifestyle.
Their approach to weight loss or weight maintenance includes 150 minutes of exercise weekly and a diet of lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
In other news, the Fit City 5-2-1-0 program has expanded in schools outside of Tyler, including Vista Academy, Whitehouse ISD and Canton ISD. Program officials will conduct a second survey later this school year to get feedback on the program’s effectiveness.
